Aluminium joinery is one of the lowest-maintenance choices you can make for your home. But a little regular care goes a long way — keeping your windows and doors looking their best and performing properly for decades to come. Here's what you need to know.
Cleaning your joinery
The basics are simple. Wash frames regularly with warm water and a mild soap — dishwashing liquid works perfectly. Use a soft-bristled brush or cloth, wash the full frame, rinse with clean water, and dry to avoid streaking. That's it. No specialist products required.
What to avoid
Never use solvent-based cleaners on your joinery. Petrol, acetone, thinners, MEK and products like Jif will damage the powder coat finish. Highly acidic, alkaline or alcohol-based household cleaners are also off the list.
How often to clean
How often depends on where you live.
- Coastal, geothermal or industrial environments — every 3 months
- Rural or residential environments — twice a year
The closer you are to salt air or industrial exposure, the more regularly you should clean.
Paint, sealant and concrete splashes
During construction, splashes happen. Remove paint or sealant with a cloth soaked in methylated spirits — but wash it off immediately with soapy water afterwards. Concrete and mortar should be removed as soon as possible; left too long, they can cause lasting damage to the frame.
A note on sunscreen
Sunscreens containing zinc or titanium oxides can damage powder coat surfaces over time. If joinery comes into contact with sunscreen — during construction or otherwise — clean it off promptly with soapy water and rinse thoroughly.
